There are a number of problems with the reference to beauty in this context and in the biblical text in general. In the modern world beauty is highly prized. The media would lead us to believe it is the only thing that matters.14 Despite Frymer-Kensky’s claim that beauty is always a desirable trait in a wife and, in the Bible, a mark of divine favor,15 beauty, especially in women, often leads to trouble.
